Holiday bokeh, get yours now

If you ever wanted to try to capture beautiful bokeh with your camera, there isn’t a better time than right now. A Christmas tree lit with bright lights is the perfect backdrop. As a bonus, you might even get that perfect Christmas card photo.

Some of these were taken with my 50mm and some with my 85mm. I couldn’t tell much difference in how they performed in this situation.

I took this first picture Tuesday and it wasn’t long before I was completely sucked in to the bokeh behind my subject, totally losing my focus and going crazy over colored lights.

Now I make someone sit in front of the tree every day.

Here’s how to do it. Set your aperture its lowest value. Both my 50 mm and the 85 mm I used it will go to 1.8. If you have some natural light in the room to light up your subject it will really help. I opened a door, but in some photos my subject still seemed too dark.

Position your subject a few feet from the tree. Now focus on your subject and your camera will do the rest. The background will blur and those lights will sparkle.

It’s holiday magic.

You won’t want to miss it.

If you get some shots please share them with me. Either leave a comment with a link to your blog or you can post them on my fan page on Facebook. I’d love to see them.

:) I have been doing a lot of this lately. :) I created the graphic for the Post out of a bokeh shot of my tree and garland. :) Did you catch that on the carnival last week?

I also just went outside tonight in the fog to get some of the outside tree. :)

this is absolutely beautiful! i try this technique with dew drops in the morning, or a post-rain drenched branch... love the colored lights, tho...

Believe it or not, I totally did this with a point and click camera! No, really! Well, not the kids and Christmas tree, but I took a close up shot of a toy horse on the camera's macro setting and the background totally blurred. Consistently (like 5 times!). Ok, fine, I'll post the pictures on my blog. LOL http://kelleyandphotos.blogspot.com

Christmas tree bokeh totally rocks! It's crazy how something simple brings me so much joy - it's like having a new toy to play with or something. I just posted some earlier this week as well. Beautiful picts!

Love these pics and totally swiping this idea!

Now I have to get the tree...
  • Talysa
I was able to achieve this with my zoom lens last night at church...except I used manual focus and I didn't use a subject...I also then zoomed way back and the bokeh got bigger and ran together more...it's very pretty..I'll have to put it up to see.

And yes, Bare Minerals...see if you have a store in a local mall..we do here in Nashville and I was able to let them give me a makeover with it...fell in love...instantly. I could go nuts in there but I just bought their foundation, bronzer, and mineral veil. Then I just piecemeal everything else...from a 99cent "love my eyes" eyeliner to Clinque shadows..to cover girl lipstick. I highly recommend it.

Every time I come by your blog I throw myself a little pity party cause I don't have a good camera. Good pics are all about the camera, right? It doesn't have anything to do with the photographer does it:)

    Love your pictures!

glad i inspired some of you to put up your tree! what are you waiting for?
  • Melissa Stover
Jenn, i know! isn't that awesome. i haven't gotten any good pictures that way yet, but it's neat to try it.
  • Melissa Stover
kelly, susan, you both can do it. keep trying. put your subject a few feet away from the tree then you stand back and zoom into your subject. that always helped me achieve a blurred background before i had the 50mm lens.

Mmm... I love me some bokeh! I'm a total bokeh nut. I think we are putting our tree up this weekend, so I'll be able to get some shots then. Thanks for the great post!

    Susan-

My one and only lens that I have is a telephoto 18-105mm. The lowest aperture mine will come down to is 3.5, too, and can still make the bokeh. You should be able to just use the steps the gives you and fly with it. :) Hope that helps!
  • Susan
I only have the lens my camera came with...the 18-55mm so the lowest I can go is 3.5. Is there any way I can create that with my lens without going macro? I tried to get some bokeh of and ornament with the lights in the background by going macro but couldn't pull it off. Tips?
  • Jenn
    I heart bokeh!
I've got to try that out.

I am still amazed that I can take my 50mm off and turn it around to make a macro lens. :D That amazes me.....but it doesn't take much to do that. Haha!
  • Kelly @ Love Well
I love shots with bokeh. I'm always trying to make them work with my point and shoot, and unless I'm shooting macro, it's almost impossible. The lowest f-stop I can get is 2.8, which doesn't seem low enough. (What do you think?)

Your pictures - and your kids - are gorgeous! :]
