Libraries are no place for toddlers

the library

I had a flashback today to the days when I had to ban Milo from the library. It doesn’t seem like it was all that long ago. You see, he learned to walk much earlier than Tess did. He was an expert at running through the aisles and pulling books off shelves by the time he was her age. She, is just beginning. Today I realized she might need to be banned from the library now.

First, wanted out of the stroller. Then she howled. She spotted a package of crackers in my bag and wanted them right away! My no answer sent her into hysterics. So, I sent her to the window seat with Milo to distract her. They had a deep conversation about high, scary windows.

But that didn’t last long. Soon enough she was zipping up and down aisles, disappearing around corners and leaving a trail of destruction behind her.

Still, we managed to fill up our book cart.

I always say, “We’ll just get a few. How about 3 each?” Everyone agrees.

But once we’re in there, we lose all control. I can never say no when Milo asks, “Can we buy this one too?”

“Borrow,” I correct.

“Can we borrow this one?” And this one and this one?

the library books

Before we know it, our book basket over-floweth.

pile of books

Isn’t it exciting? I love library trips, just not so much with the toddler.

Your sweet baby couldn't have been too bad. I didn't know you guys were there, and no one complained about a destruct-o baby in the workroom after you left. Looks like you made a good haul. Our circulation statistics thank you!

Library trips were the highlight of our week when my kids were younger. So nice, peaceful, and free. Now they want cars. Real ones.

How do you even keep track of all those books? LOL.

HaHa… We're the same way when it comes to the quantity of books we borrow. I don't know why, but I always enjoy looking at pics of other people's libraries. STrange.

I would tell you we (my mama and us older gals) can relate, but we live in such a small town and our library is so small that it's not worth going to. We are a book lovin' family, though! Yours looks really nice!

it's sad, isn't it? My kids are 6, 4, and 2 and they have logged very little library time, simply because I've had a baby/toddler for the past 6 years. Nothing like entering a giant building full of “no touch” and “get back here!” That is a sweet picture of your two on the window seat tho :)

    I love library trips, too!

I hardly ever take my kids, though. I always plan to go solo. I can get in and out quicker. I just take *orders* before I leave home of what everyone wants.

When my oldest two were toddlers, we went to the library every week. (We lived in a small town. Other than shop at Wal-Mart, it was the only activity we could find.) Thankfully, they had a two-story library that kept the children's books and toys AWAY from the hush-hush adult area. So quiet and order weren't as critical.

Plus, since they had computers and games and toys and puppets and coloring stations in addition to all the books, it was a fun playdate every week. Yes, they would sometimes pull books off the shelves. But it was standard fare for that floor.

even in the children's section i can't help but feeling uneasy when she pulls books off the shelf and throws them in the floor. had that baby yet? (sorry.)

my kids die an agonizing death if i don't allow them to go sometimes. but i do like to put books on reserve and make it a quick trip.

we have a very small local library that we wore out pretty quick. this is the big library in little rock. our state offers a gateway card that gives small town folks access to the big libraries. best day of my life when i found out that info.

My boys always ask to “buy” books from the library, too. i love their mis-speaks.

Me and my kids are the same way: “just onnnne more book. please??” and I'm as bad as the kids because if I know if I don't check out “just one more book” i may be missing the best read in the world!
