Mother’s Day ended promptly at 3 am this morning. The peaceful, relaxing day, and then evening was disrupted by the sound of the dogs barking right outside my bedroom window. Barking, barking, barking. I tried ear plugs. Then I tried opening the door and yelling at them. Then they ran inside and I tried screaming and pulling their collars until I got them out.
It was quiet. I stumbled back to bed.
The quiet lasted about 2 minutes and then, bark, bark, bark. I put my iPod back on and listened to a story for while and tried to drift off. Maybe I did. Until, bark, bark, bark, right next to my ear. I opened my eyes.
“My throat hurts,” said Milo, then he barked out a cough. Croup.
I got him up and medicated him. We tried to settle back to sleep. It was slow coming. Morning came too early, especially since Tess woke up before our agreed upon wake-up call at 10 am.
Today I’ve showered, but I didn’t fix my hair. I’ve taught half of the school work and tried to take a nap.
I have great kids who try very hard to let me nap when they know I need to, but there are a few things they just can’t help like slamming doors (x20), running up and down the hallway (x100), telling each other to “be quiet, mom is sleeping” (x5 whispered loudly in the hallway outside my room).
I appreciate their sweet efforts though.
Tess just brought me my ear buds. I hope I’m not in need of iPod therapy tonight. She broke them.
Sick babies, crying kids, snotty noses, lost sleep, lost shoes, broken things, hugs, kisses, cuddles and giggles all for me. Isn’t it Mother’s Day every day when you’re a mother?
