Breakfast in a hurry

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

Most of our days are slow and easy, but there are times when we are more rushed and Sundays are one of those busy days. We leave in two groups, my husband takes the early birds and I bring in the slackers. This means we are rarely at the table at the same time, and no one bothers to cook breakfast.

Lunch is the meal focus on Sundays because my whole family shows up after church to eat. My mind is on pre-heating the oven, having a clean table and my aunt and uncle dropping off dishes for lunch later on their way to church.

Breakfast on these days are whatever you can grab:  fix it yourself or go hungry. If I’m on top of my game I can pop some canned cinnamon rolls in the oven. But more often than not, we grab something in a wrapper, bypassing not only the stove, but also plates and bowls. If we have time for a bowl, cereal is our best option. It’s yummy, easy and 3 out of 4 of my children can fix it themselves.

For breakfast on those rushed days what I make depends on how tight the rush is.

If I have 15 minutes, I’ll pop a frozen waffle into the toaster.

If I have 10 minutes, I can make a bowl of cereal.

Just 5 minutes? Well, that’s going to have to be breakfast in a wrapper on the run.

If we're really rushed we grab pop tarts or granola bars and a banana. A little more time and we'd have cereal, though for my crew that's 2-3 whole boxes for one breakfast so I try to make things at home when at all possible (pancakes, muffins, oatmeal..) . :)

Granola bar or cereal bar and coffee. In a pinch I can get away with just coffee, but within an hour or so I've got to have some food.

cold cereal, or a muffin (from the freezer) and a yogurt…. those are our best “quick” breakfasts. :)

Daughter always has a smoothie with fruit, veggies, soy protein and p.b. that I make on Sunday and put in five different cups; that way she can just grab one each morning.

On Sunday mornings we are in a huge rush…but I love the fact that I can still make something warm and simple by making Pillsbury Cinnamon or Orange Rolls.

Or sometimes I buy the blueberry and strawberry muffin mixes that you just add milk to.

My 14 and 10 yr olds can even make these on their own so that is super helpful if say my hair takes a little more coaxing than normal. Or I get caught up in pulling the gray out of it.

Poptart, banana, or granola bar. Sometimes I freeze the leftover pancakes from the weekend. Then I can just pop it in the microwave or toaster and I'm good to go!

Bananas are a quickie for us. Poptarts if we have them…frozen waffles are good, too. They can be warmed up and doused with a little butter and just enough syrup that they can fold it up and eat it on the run. :)

I love breakfast, I would eat it for every meal if I could! If I have the time, I love to make french toast or crepes, but most mornings I just have cereal and a piece of toast.

If I have bananas, those are the easiest to grab. Pop Tarts or granola bars are next. Then maybe prepackaged peanut butter and crackers.

Getting out the door with a 3-year-old and 9-month-old by 7:15 with dry hair and make-up is unheard of for me. So when Bible school week rolled around, I tried to think ahead. My gal loves some cereal, but it's too messy for the car. To solve this problem, I made baggies of her faves– Cheerios and Special K Red Berries– and a sippy cup of milk the night before so we could grab and go. As good as a bowl and she gets some fruit too- right? :)

  • JessieC

I grab granola bars when I’m in a hurry.

We have 3 kids age 10-17 who are old enough to get something quick but often push the clock. So I put the quick breakfast items on the table the night before: cereal, fruit, poptarts are staples. sometimes they really ARE running out the door with a folded waffle with peanut butter or a baggy of cereal in their backpack. ME? I indulge in rice cakes smothered in peanut butter and topped with sliced bananas. I eat these on the run too!
