Summer memories/spc-5-giveaway

One evening in August, I was in the middle of teaching Vacation Bible School at church. I came home exhausted, with a headache and wanting nothing more than to get in my bed and relax. But, it was the night of the Perseid meteor shower and I knew this was something I wanted to share with my kids.

We gathered up flashlights and a quilt and walked through the already dewy grass to the trampoline. I was sandwiched in the middle of three of my kids who were excitedly chattering and giggling. It was a good thing meteor watching wasn’t like deer hunting, no quiet required.

Suddenly a meteor shot across the sky, bright and blazing, startling us with its intensity. My son gripped my arm, a little frightened. The girls squealed in delight. I thought to myself, I almost missed this.

Making time to do those special things, even when we don’t always feel like it,  is how our memories and traditions are created.

One tradition we do is a birthday breakfast. The birthday girl or boy gets breakfast their way. Sometimes it’s chocolate chip pancakes, sometimes it’s chocolate gravy and biscuits and sometimes it’s their favorite cereal, either way they get to choose.

I'd have to say just all the times we took to get out in NATURE. We got Jenna (4) a pair of binoculars, and we went to parks, botanical gardens, forests, lakes, etc. She collected rocks, leaves, & pine cones everywhere we went, and we all collected memories.

My new husband and I caught the Perseids this year too. Our first night sleeping outside, all cuddled up in each others arms. Ahhh…

Beautiful post! I loved what you said about almost missing the meteor. Those are the moments that count, you know? :) Awesome that you shared that with your kids. Our fav summer memory was our oldest birthday party, she wanted everything pink! Then we went camping and ate tons of s'mores ;)

Our entire family got together at my brother's house for a cookout/game night. We had a blast laughing and talking. Money was tight this year for all of us and nobody took a vacation but it was much more fun to just enjoy each other's company. I laughed so much that night my face hurt from smiling.

Our favorite memories are all kept in journals we did all summer! We have a handmade illustration by each child and a few words of what we did! It is so neat to look back over it all (zoo, park, moving to a new state, vacation, etc)

We have two “favorite” family moments: my son was awarded the “Most Improved” and MVP awards at the end of his baseball season (I guess every time he hit a home-run would be a favorite moment of mine); and, I am a new, first-time, grandmother–so, every time we are with my 5-month-old grandson, Orion, is very special!

I had a 2 week vacation on Cape Cod with my family, including my 11 YO daughter and my 1 YO son. Lots of water time, seeing both of them enjoy it in their own different ways. Lazy dinners on the deck, lobster, ice cream, onion rings, gorgeous sunsets…it was fantastic.

This was officially my son's summer to do all the things he missed by being hospitalized. He got to go swimming for the first time (he is 3!). He got to go to several birthday parties and play outside everyday. Seeing his smile in the beautiful sunshine has made this “Our” summer!

The best part of my summer is all pool related… Fourth of July pool party and cookout with lots of relatives and lots of swimming the rest of the summer–relaxing and no pressure.
