One evening in August, I was in the middle of teaching Vacation Bible School at church. I came home exhausted, with a headache and wanting nothing more than to get in my bed and relax. But, it was the night of the Perseid meteor shower and I knew this was something I wanted to share with my kids.
We gathered up flashlights and a quilt and walked through the already dewy grass to the trampoline. I was sandwiched in the middle of three of my kids who were excitedly chattering and giggling. It was a good thing meteor watching wasn’t like deer hunting, no quiet required.
Suddenly a meteor shot across the sky, bright and blazing, startling us with its intensity. My son gripped my arm, a little frightened. The girls squealed in delight. I thought to myself, I almost missed this.
Making time to do those special things, even when we don’t always feel like it, is how our memories and traditions are created.

One tradition we do is a birthday breakfast. The birthday girl or boy gets breakfast their way. Sometimes it’s chocolate chip pancakes, sometimes it’s chocolate gravy and biscuits and sometimes it’s their favorite cereal, either way they get to choose.
