Summer memories/spc-5-giveaway

One evening in August, I was in the middle of teaching Vacation Bible School at church. I came home exhausted, with a headache and wanting nothing more than to get in my bed and relax. But, it was the night of the Perseid meteor shower and I knew this was something I wanted to share with my kids.

We gathered up flashlights and a quilt and walked through the already dewy grass to the trampoline. I was sandwiched in the middle of three of my kids who were excitedly chattering and giggling. It was a good thing meteor watching wasn’t like deer hunting, no quiet required.

Suddenly a meteor shot across the sky, bright and blazing, startling us with its intensity. My son gripped my arm, a little frightened. The girls squealed in delight. I thought to myself, I almost missed this.

Making time to do those special things, even when we don’t always feel like it,  is how our memories and traditions are created.

One tradition we do is a birthday breakfast. The birthday girl or boy gets breakfast their way. Sometimes it’s chocolate chip pancakes, sometimes it’s chocolate gravy and biscuits and sometimes it’s their favorite cereal, either way they get to choose.

Wheeeee! A new header!! I LOVED those pics of your baby girl and your manly man. So sweet. Though, I'm not sure your dog doesn't look dead – though, that too makes me laugh.

We missed the meteor shower. Boo. We'll be making plans for the next one, though.

Lovin' your breakfast posts, by the way.

My favorite summer time moment is sitting around the campfire with kids and grandkids, listening to the owls and coyotes. Love summer time.

My favorite moment from this summer was roasting marshmallows with friends. It's such a simple, cheap thing, but it was so special because we all sang worship songs, rather than campfire songs.

Our trip to Tangier Island was definitely one, and impromptu stops at Vinny's for pizza after Sunday night church.

My favorite thing we did this summer was our road trip to Santa Cruz. When we go on vacation we usually go as a family, but this short trip we went with friends. We had a blast with good company and got to see the beautiful California coast. Couldn't ask for more!

We've had so many great summer moments…and most of them were just the mundane ones around the house…when I would hear the kids talking about something new they learned or were reading about in their book, helping each other or playing together so nicely, which they do daily. It has been a GREAT summer!

The best summer experience for me was to be out paddling in my kayak and observing the migrating shore birds up close and personal. One day my kayak quietly floated right up to a sandbar with about 200 different birds and they didn't even flinch. I got some great photographs and several minutes of experiencing complete awe. ~karen

I had 2 things that were memorable this summer. My daughter participated in her first triathalon and I went with her. It was a wonderful weekend in Traverse City with my oh so grown up (22yo) daughter. The second thing was a few days away with my hubby in the heart of Amish country (Berlin Ohio) just the 2 of us. Great giveaway!

I was able to enjoy the great weather with my 9 month old twin girls! WE found out they LOVE the water and spent as much time as possible in the pool and the lake! They looked adorable in their matching swimsuits and floaties..I could not ask for a better summer as a first time mom!

We took our kids to Wild RIver Country, something that tends to make me be a stick in the mud b/c I don't like those sort of things. I finally got over myself, and had the best time laughing and spashing with my kids in the wave pool.

My number 1 favorite moment of the summer though was when the judge officially declared our boys as our children, and our adoption was finalized! It was the most beautiful moment ever!

Driving out to Montauk for the day-about 1 1/2 hours one way- and you feel as if you have had a little vacation! The beach and the country all rolled into one! Seafood and little shops.

One of our favorite things to do this summer has been water gun fights. Okay, more like super soaker fights… at NIGHT. Lots of squealing and screaming going on. Good times, good times!

Long walks on the beach, and tennis at the local courts. Always good for a laugh

One particularly fun memory was this weekend with the girls at the state fair. I gave my niece my camera and let her take all the pictures that she wanted. I ended up with pictures of every single rabbit, chicken, and baby goat at the fair.

We made the trip to Buckskin Joe's next to the Royal Gorge. It's an old west town built in the 50s that was originally a movie set. It's been used in many movies over the years and they have gun fights throughought the day on Main Street. We also rode a little tourist train out to an overlook above the Arkansas River where you can see the Royal Gorge Bridge. It was a great day together as a family.

We watched the Perseid meteor shower too – my husband and I, our 4 kiddos, and my sister and her husband. It was part of our “stay-cation” fun. We had a memorable time lying in the gravel drive at the top of the hill at the farm – in the dark, giggling over silly stories, and oohing and ahhing over each heavenly streak as it whizzed past.
