What gets me out of bed at 4:40 in the morning

yard sale

It’s been well documented on this blog that I like to stay up late and wake up late. So, it comes as a surprise to some people that I would occasionally wake up at 4:30 in the morning for anything. Actually it surprises me too.

I always wanted to be the kind of person who went to yard sales and found great deals, but I had no idea how to go about it. And, I probably never would have without my cousin Emily. Without her, my yard sale days would not exist.

Here’s why:

yard sale 1

She’s prepared. She locates all the sales on a map, types out directions and organizes everything so we hit the ones that start first right away and follow a pattern to the next one.

Most of the time we get there before they are even officially open. Like we did for this sale. They were still putting things out as we were looking. I think it was just past 6 am.

yard sale 4

The reason we have to get such an early start is we live over an hour away from the big city. There are sometimes 30 or more yard sales listed on the day we go. That makes it worth it. Getting up super early to go to 3 yard sales in my area, not so worth it.

yard sale 2

There are so many sales and so little time that sometimes Emily puts us on a timer. Though she’s never had to force us away from a sale, we try to maximize our time by not lingering at sales that don’t offer what we want.

yard sale 3

What do we want? Well, it depends. Sometimes I go with a list of specific items I’d like to find. Sometime I just stumble onto something I never thought I wanted until I found it for $3. I’m almost always on the lookout for good kid clothes and shoes.

yard sale4

I found this rug Saturday for $10. A rug was on my list. It won’t live in my kitchen since it’s already had pie turned upside down on it. I wanted it for my entry, but when we came in Saturday, this is where it landed and I liked it. Its days there are numbered though.

yard sale5

These Pier 1 chair cushions ($2 each) were not on my list, but they were so cute I couldn’t resist. Even though they were only selling 3 and I have 6 chairs. A few people will have padded seats to sit in Sunday.

I also bought the tackle box full of thread, needles and other sewing notions for $3.

yard sale pillows

Pillows seemed to lure me in this time too. I bought the two European pillows for $10 each. They are feather and came with the shams. When I got home I realized I had no idea how to make up a bed like a magazine cover, but that’s how I pictured they’d make my bed look when I bought them. I also bought the two little feather pillows. I have a thing for feather throw pillows now. I’ll probably make new slipcovers for them.

yard sale

Some things that I didn’t get, but I really liked were the tandem bicycle ($100), the firetruck ($25) and the weight bench. Oh, just kidding about the weight bench.

Do you shop yard sales? What are some of your best finds?

I want to be a good yard saler (sailor?) but I lack the organization. I happened to be awake around 7:30 Saturday morning so I hopped on craigslist to see what was going on near me.  There were several community sales going on within 15 minutes of me so I headed up the ridge with nothing in mind. I did find a little tikes push car for the boy, $10. I was hoping for sewing stuff or a desk.
I’ve wondered though how it works to go to yard sales with a friend. Do you fight over stuff, is it I licked it first so it’s mine, or do you just have different things you are looking for?

in our case we are looking for different things. emily doesn’t have kids and
often my aunt goes who is looking for furniture. we haven’t fought yet. :)

We had a couple town wide sales over the last couple weekends in our area.  Found some great buys.  A brand new, never taken out of the box, bread machine for $20… just when mine was dying.  A snow cone maker for $1.  Probably my best find was a range hood in perfect condition for $1… when brand new they are over $100 (we didn’t have one).  So… there are some great buys to be found if you’re careful.  Your rug is beautiful!

There are times when I wish I was a early riser so I could hit the sales.  The few, and I mean few, times I have tried I never find anything I want or need.  so I gave up.  One of these days I will meet my “Emily” who will take me out at 4:30 am.

I did more when the kids were little but not so much anymore. I have too much junk as it is. It is hard to justify bringing more junk home, even if it is cheap. I always seem to find that one thing I didn’t know I needed and can’t resist. Then 6 mos later it becomes a part of my junk pile.

Looks like very serious yard sale shopping here.  I used to enjoy the thrill of the hunt at yard sales and estate sales, but now I just want to rid myself of stuff.

I used to go yard sale-ing all the time when my kids were little, too.  That is where I got most of their toys.  I also found some great housewares when I was first setting up my home.  I hit maybe 2 a year now and mainly buy books.

Went to yard sales last Friday and got 4 pairs of shorts and 4 pairs of Capris for $2. TOTAL. Yard sales around here must be much cheaper. Of course, not very many people around here either. LOL
