My family celebrated the 3rd of July as we do every year, with our church family at a picnic, fireworks, fun day. But, for the 4th of July, Ruthanne and I had something fun up our sleeves. Ever since I saw her blue hour shot, I have been begging, pleading with her to take me to the city to get some of my own (because I can’t do anything alone, she has to hold my hand, er, stand at a comfortable distance from me).
So, we planned to meet up on the 4th of July and take some fireworks shots. Emily agreed to come with me (more hand holding) and I brought one, only one child (the easiest).
We had supper together then went to the river on the North Little Rock side to find a spot. I’ve always wanted to see the fireworks in Little Rock and never have. Now I can finally cross that off my list. And it was so worth it!
Just before I left home a huge storm came up and really cooled things down. By the time we got to Little Rock it wasn’t as cool as home, but the weather was perfect. The sunset was warm and beautiful and we camped out in our spot and started setting up tripods.
It was just a spectacular night. I kind of wished the rest of my family was with me, but I could imagine Tess trying to leap into the water and Milo trying to grab her before she jumped therefore causing them both to tumble into the river requiring a major rescue. So, it was good to be without them for a few hours.
And, suddenly it was blue hour time and I fell in love. With Blue Hour. I might never shoot anything but blue hour again. I’ll travel the world just to get blue hour shots in different locations. You know, if I were a traveling kind of gal.
Blue hour is spectacular. It’s magical. It’s worth doing. And anyone can do it. The tripod is the key.
I took this ghostly shot of Ruthanne just before the fireworks started.
I said, after blue hour, I didn’t even care if I got a decent fireworks shot or not. But I sort of really did care. And, I did get some decent ones after all.
Location is key. The water, the city lights all add to the beauty of the fireworks display.
I hope your 4th of July was just as magical.
