Before and after, silhouette beach shot

One of my goals during our beach trip was to take a lot of silhouette photos. It’s something of a personal project this year to seek out fun places for silhouette images. I thought it would be easy to do on the beach, but it was harder than I expected.

When we went to Johnson’s Beach one evening for some photos, we found tall dunes and this was the perfect spot. No condos in the background, no crouching low to get more of the horizon. And I loved the sea oats. I’ve learned that having something in the shot, especially if it represents movement, besides the subject makes a more interesting silhouette image.

The above image came off my camera as a raw file and I opened it in Photoshop. I edited this image using MCP actions, Outdoor Illusions/ Lake Michigan Sunset. This action is designed for silhouettes and it really enhances the sky. Sometimes too much, so I always lower the opacity.

I love the resulting image. Have you tried shooting silhouettes?

Melissa, I’m a friend of Emily’s and she told me about your blog. Thanks for the tips. I wasn’t even sure what RAW is on my Nikon D60. I was actually looking at some of the settings and wondering about it. What is this setting for?

hey thanks for reading judy! raw is just a type of format that digial slr cameras can shoot in. it is an unfinished image that will need software to process it. sort of like unprocessed film. here’s an article that can better explain it. http://digital-photography-school.com/raw-vs-jpeg

I love this picture – the way she is moving gives a feeling of anticipation like there is fun up ahead. I have to say though that I like the original better than the altered.
