I’ve always wanted to do a nature journal. I’ve bought my kids journals and we’ve worked at it from time to time, but never seemed to get in the groove of it. But lately I’ve been so inspired by Kristin Roger’s (@kristinrogers on instagram) photos of her nature journals that I wanted to really dive in this year.
I bought everyone a journal (me too) and everyone their own watercolor set. I have been so delighted to see my kids really take to it.
Kristin recommended Beginning Watercolor Journaling, a video that introduces you to watercolor journaling and some of the basic techniques. It was helpful, but very cheesy. My kids laughed and poked fun. It is not worth the $30 they charge for it, but then again maybe it is because it got us off to a good start. Maybe it even sparked a little inspiration. Someone like Kristin should do an updated version.

See, even the three year old loves it. I’ve done two pages in my own journal. I used to draw all the time when I was younger, but never take the time to do that now. I hope this will encourage my own creativity a bit.
Here’s a list of what I bought:
These watercolor journals: Strathmore Visual Journal- 140lb Cold Press Watercolor Paper 5.5×8 Inch
Four Prang watercolor sets like this: Prang 16 color watercolor set (but I need one more, no one wants to share with me).
The cheesy video.
And some brushes.
On the video they use a cool water brush, but we just use what we had. I still need a good permanent marker for outlining things.
