The chickens and the eggs

We are enjoying our chickens so much. They have finally started laying regularly so we are bringing in eggs every day. The kids love going out and finding eggs.

We’ve even got a few they are sitting on and hopefully we’ll have baby chicks in a few weeks.

The dogs, of course, are dying for a taste of fresh chicken. They circle the cage when we are out there in a frenzy of excitement.

Sadly, we lost a pet this week. Our beloved Leroy was accidentally run over by my husband. He suffered a bit on Sunday while we debated our options. A weekend trip to the vet, shoot him, or let him suffer till Monday. It looked like only his back leg was broken and it didn’t seem bad enough to shoot him. Then I found a vet open so we took him in. At first it seemed like good news. His leg wasn’t even broken, just badly twisted and his ligaments were torn. He would need some stitches and some leg care. They would keep him overnight.

But the next day we got a call that he had died unexpectedly. Even the vet was shocked.

there will never another cat like Leroy.

We loved our Leroy, and I don’t even really like cats. He tolerated our dogs so well. Letting them drag him around by the neck so often that he occasionally was missing all his fur around his neck.

But that’s always the problem with having pets. You love them and then they die.

We should be used to it by now, but we’re not.

Insta Friday the 13th

My dog is howling in the laundry room. She’s decided she doesn’t like to sleep alone but we don’t trust her yet loose in the house. I’m all packed up to head out to Ruthanne’s house tomorrow for the Shoot Shop Workshop, and I’m sitting in the dark. Everyone is in bed.

Here’s my week from Instagram.

It’s raining baby birds. We found four.

operation bird rescue: found nest. tractor bucket not tall enough.

We tried to put them back. They kept falling out. They all died. :(

she said, "mama I'm helping Owen but I'm not poking my eye out." cracked me up!!

She said, “Mama, I’m helping Owen but I am not poking my eye out.” Obviously she has heard that phrase a time or two: don’t poke you’re eye out!

flashback

Flashback to 1990. I’m thinking of reinacting this photo soon and doing a side-by-side comparison. I’m so bummed I no longer have those parrot earrings. And how about that denim jumper. It’s like I was destined to be a homeschool mom.

Talking outloud

Yesterday Ruthanne came over and we practiced our slide show for the Shoot Shop that is this Saturday!!! Cue the nerves. When I agreed to do this with her I didn’t actually think about all the talking out loud in public I’d be doing.

In front of people. Making sense. Using words. Terrifying.

ruthanne

Thank goodness Ruthanne is very organized. She tells me what to do and I do it. I like it that way.

I’ve read that it’s good to get outside your comfort zone every once in a while. I feel like I’m doing that a lot lately. Starting my own business, going on a Ladies’ Retreat, flying to another state for a blog conference (in October).

I’ve even let my son start baseball. I go to practices. I will soon be going to games. I might be expected to cheer him on. Out loud. In public.

I think I’d much rather hide at home clipping my toenails.

Or watching her clip her toenails.
