A new desk

office 1

Naturally I searched and searched for a picture of my office before and could not find one. I know I took some, but those elusive before photos always disappear on me when I need them.

My office is a tiny space, smaller than my walk-in closet and right off the living room. I had a ginormous desk in here that made it difficult to even close the door. It was like one of those impossibly small public bathrooms that you have to be just in the right spot before you can open or close the door. I knew I didn’t want to buy another desk. I wanted it to be simple and I wanted to reduce the amount of stuff I had floating around in all those massive drawers.

I was overwhelmed by the stuff I hauled out of there. Lots and lots of loose photos and cds.

My uncle had this piece of wood just perfect for the space. My solution for storage was buying a small file cabinet to roll under the desk.

I’m slowly adding art to the walls that I love. There’s a print I bought in Seattle at the Pike Place market and a “hello daydream” print from etsy.  I just got the 16 x 20 of my daughter this week and I have a few more I want to add soon. I made the felt circle garland years ago and I picked up the white shelves at a yard sale.

office basket

This little basket holds things I need for mailing to my clients and some packaging stuff. I love having it handy and easy to find right here on the desk.

The bird prints on the wall I ordered from etsy about a year ago. I still love them.

Painting it white

house 3

Emily and I finished painting the living room a couple of weeks ago and she helped me rehang my art. Here’s a before of the room and the above the mantle area from Christmas. We moved my huge wall map over the mantle first and I loved it. I loved the texture of the wood frame and the color in that space. Then we added my canvases.

I love the white. It feels so clean and fresh.

When we finished, above my couch was bare. That’s where my map used to live. I decided we needed something big in that space. Something with texture, but something free. I didn’t have extra dollars set aside to fill that space right now. Emily and her husband came up with this rustic gate/raft looking piece and we put my giant S on that along with a framed print. It fit my needs for right now and it makes a big impact.

Have you ever hung something large and unusual on your wall?

White

I made the decision to repaint all the areas of my home that had not been repainted since we moved in 8 years ago before Christmas. I dreaded tackling the job. My dining room, kitchen, breakfast area, back entry and living room are a continuous wall. There’s no stopping point so I knew I’d be doing all those rooms. I also wanted to do the entry and my office, possibly even the hallway. I decided on white pretty early even though several people tried to talk me out of it and everyone I told said, “White?” in a horrified tone.

You wouldn’t believe how difficult it was to make a decision on what shade of white. I assumed it would be easy. I was wrong. I went in and chose a color, came home and painted my dining room and hated it. It has a blue undertone and was wrong, wrong, wrong. I chose again, Roman Column from Sherwin Williams and it was right, right, right.

I had three helpers on Saturday and we got three rooms finished. I have lots left to do, but I’ve made a good start.

The red chairs are new (overstocks.com). I wanted something petite so we could squeeze more people around the table. I have three tables in my house and they are all full, overflowing and people eating on the living room chairs every Sunday. Also, I hated my wooden chairs that came with the table after I painted them white. However, I moved them in the living room (bottom picture) and now I like them again.

Ignore the guinea pig cage in the corner. My house will never look like a magazine cover because there will always be messes, pets, and piles of clutter.

turquoise dresser

I love the way my turquoise dresser looks against the white wall and also the children’s art (and one of Sara Mincy’s paintings) above it.

living room

This is the living room with the Blonde paint that was everywhere. I don’t hate this color, but if I was going to repaint, I wanted a change. This room, hopefully, will soon be white too.
